Becton Dickinson (NYSE:BDX) is reportedly expected to pay over $1B to settle claims related to the use of its mesh wire product to treat hernias. Citing sources familiar with the settlement, Bloomberg said that the medical products maker will pay in excess of $1B to settle more than 38K claims filed over the safety of the product.

Becton Dickinson has agreed to resolve nearly all U.S. lawsuits by people who say they were injured by its hernia repair mesh, about 38,000 cases, in an unusual settlement overseen jointly by state and federal courts,

Becton Dickinson & Co. has agreed to settle the “vast majority” of the thousands of lawsuits claiming hernia patients were harmed by improper surgical mesh made by units of the medical technology giant,

The settlement with Becton, Dickinson and Co., or BD, resolves nearly 25,000 cases in federal multidistrict litigation and more than 15,000 in state courts in Rhode Island, where Bard is headquartered.

BD or Becton, Dickinson and Company announced it has reached an agreement to resolve the vast majority of its existing hernia litigation.Terms of the settlement agreement, which are confidential, include cases in both the Rhode Island consolidated litigation and the federal multidistrict litigation in Ohio.
