From Trump campaign signs to Planned Parenthood bumper stickers, license plate readers around the US are creating searchable databases that reveal Americans’ political leanings and more.

City leaders, along with law enforcement officials gathered to announce the launch of a program that will install 100 license plate reading cameras in the San Fernando Valley that authorities believe will help police track criminals down.

The ALPR cameras assist law enforcement in tracking and recording license plates as they pass through, to narrow the search for vehicles tied to crimes.

LOS ANGELES - License plate readers are up and running in the northwest San Fernando Valley, where police say they are already catching criminals . LAPD said a suspect wanted in a robbery targeting a 93-year-old man in a Costco parking lot was captured with the help of the license plate readers.

The cameras will be at or near intersections in Chatsworth, Northridge, Granada Hills, Sherwood Forest, Porter Ranch, West Hills and North Hills.

The license plate readers are being installed at various strategic locations in the northwestern part of the San Fernando Valley.

There are already 24 license plate readers installed in the San Fernando Valley, and the LAPD is hoping to have 100 up and running by the end of the year.

Councilman John Lee Lee says that since the effort began to install 100 readers in his district, they have already helped solve a pair of robberies.

The City Commission approved Fargo police to continue using their "Flock" cameras and license plate readers that have been on a trial basis at select intersections since June.

Lee says his district is turning to technology to keep residents safe with 100 automated license plate readers going up in the San Fernando Valley, as there is a shortage of Los Angeles Police Department officers.
